What Your Massage Therapist Knows About You

Q: I know you are embarrassed that your stomach keeps making noises. I hear you sniffle and feel you shift your body around to try to camouflage it.

A: It's okay because it's just a function of your parasympathetic response system. It means you are relaxing and your body is working properly.

Q: I know you are wondering if I think your feet are gross?

A: I LOVE massaging your feet because I can focus on every little detail. It zones me out. It passes the time quickly. Unless you have a fungus, I do not think anything about your feet. I am looking past your surface to your muscles and bones.

Q:I know you are embarrassed that you didn't shave your legs?

A: No big deal. I can feel they are prickly but it means nothing to me. I feel legs all the time. Almost all of them are at least a little prickly.

Q:I know you are wondering if I notice your extra pounds?

A: I have seen up close the many different shapes and sizes that the human body comes in. I am not impressed nor disgusted by any of them. Muscle on bone with no padding is more tricky to work with anyways! I am imagining your skeleton and your muscle attachments. I hardly even see the superficial parts of you that you are thinking about.

Q: I know you are wondering if I heard you toot?

A: Yes, I did but I don't care. Again, it's your parasympathetic nervous system going to work. I am trying to relax you and this means it's working. I'll ignore it and I won't say anything. You do not have to laugh or say anything. Don't worry. I am so involved in your muscle that I'll forget about it in a second anyways.

Q: I know you are sometimes holding back tears. You suddenly feel very emotional on my table.

A: Your muscle holds your memories and feelings. you have been holding your shoulders so tight for years because of your stress and worry. I am releasing it now. If you cry.. I will simply ask if you want me to keep working or to leave you alone for a few minutes. It's your release. It's okay. I know that this is how the body and mind work sometimes.

Q: I know that some of you have had physical trauma. Sometimes my touch causes you to flinch because of painful memories.

A: I am aware of how your trauma can trigger responses to touch. Let my touch be healing for you. If you tell me that somewhere I touch bothers you I will understand. Some people have conquered fears with massage. Remember, you are in a safe and healing place right now.

I feel so privileged to be a part of this healing hour with you. This time sacred to me too.

I really love my job!
